Undertake from rurality: examples of Pueblos Remotos (part 2)

Through this post post we want to convey you projects of rural entrepreneurs connected with ecology and earth.

Last year, specifically in October 2022, he shared with you a post blog that did not know that he would end up becoming a series of articles: undertake from rurality: examples of remote peoples (part 1)

But the reality is that after giving a walk to the approach, and as I put you there, it seemed more attractive to present the projects under different categories.

If through that post post I was talking about what it means to undertake, why it is vital to have rural entrepreneurs in our experiences and focused on the accommodations with which we collaborated in Icod de los Vinos, ancient and fuencaliente, today I want to talk to you here about projects that prevail organic farming, permaculture and the primary sector in particular.

Without ecology, there is no economy

There is a very simple image, which was recorded in memory when I was in the Faculty of Economic Sciences. I do not remember exactly the date, but it had to be around 2008. I was there, sitting in the typical university classroom, to attend the first class of 'Development Economics' (given by Federico Aguilera Klink )

Before starting the class, Federico drew two circles on the board, one inside the other: the biggest circle had inside the word 'ecology' and the smallest circle had the word 'economy inside.' Next, he told us a phrase similar to this:

>
"Surely in this faculty they have taught them that this works backwards, but the first thing they have to know is that the economy depends on ecology and not the contrary."

- Federico Aguilera Klink
The economy depends on ecology and not vice versa

The economy depends on ecology and not vice versa

It was something that was recorded, because it makes all the meaning of the world, the economy is governed, mainly, for the resources that we extract from the natural environment (ecology) and then transform to market with them. Therefore, without ecology (and/or the regeneration of it) there is no economy.

Understand what we produce to live better

The previous premise did not want to use it as an anecdote that will remain 'missed' in the midst of this article, it was a small story to introduce another fundamental principle and something that we have 're-apprehended' with all our experiences: to be aware that what We produce, it helps us to have a better quality of life.

Consuming, and cultivating, organic products has a positive impact on us, on our environment and generates circular economy .

For this reason, in pueblos remotos we have always had projects related to the Earth, since we believe that understanding how these processes work is fundamental for three reasons:

  1. It transmits the importance of cycles : preparation, cultivation, collection, regeneration, times, etc.

  2. It links us to the territory and the peculiarity of the crops that occur in it.

  3. It helps us to understand the link between the project and the person (or the people) that are developing it.

Agriculture, Permaculture and Primary Sector

The moments that we have passed between crops and orchards in our experiences transmit a lot of different smells, sensations and landscapes. Either with the implementation of the permaculture in a desert territory by Verdeaurora, the care and elaboration of the seediers of the farm the coast or the plantation of olive trees by Palma Oliva Almazara.

The stories behind these three projects come from roots, to the land and the family, and all of them are worthy of telling:

  • Finca La Costa : The story of Toñi , promoter of the 'Finca La Costa' project, is a family roots history. As she herself told us: 'I have worked in many sectors, but all of them have always brought me back to earth.' The Toñi project (local actress in remote villages ICOD 2021) comes as a result of a family bond with its farm, owned by your family for many years, and your concern to plant seasonal organic products. In addition, he has managed to introduce and give a lot of 'mimo' to the production of 'edible flowers', as well as the production of seedbeds, something fundamental to talk the native seeds of the crops that he sows.

  • Verdeaurora : Verdeaurora is a project that combines permaculture, oil cultivation and aloevera, and rural accommodation, located in the municipality of Antigua (Fuerteventura) Aurora , its current director, is the third generation that takes over the farm. Its history, like that of many canaries, comes after a season studying and working outside the islands. After living a work experience in Australia, she decided that it was time to 'return home' and push the family business with another perspective, joining tradition and innovation in what they do.

  • Palma Oliva Almazara : Palma Oliva is the 'last' project of a tireless entrepreneur of the municipality of Fuencaliente ( La Palma ): Juan José Santos . The history of the olive trees of Juan José and the subsequent production of their oil, comes from an unfortunate moment. After a fire (2009) and a 'flood' (2010), Juan José's family lost a lot of vineyard culture land. His response, already in full retirement age, was not to lower his arms and leave those land to 'his luck', but he decided to try a new type of crop and to implement one of his concerns: the production of olive oil. Today, Palma Oliva not only produces an excellent quality oil, but has its own oil mill and local distribution.

In this second post blog of the series: 'undertake from rurality', I wanted to talk about the importance of the primary and ecology sector. In the next articles I will continue talking about projects with 'Alma' and that maintain the traditions of small corners of our land.

Of course, I encourage you to share this post blog since you subscribe to our newsletter to receive the new ones directly in your inbox.
