Undertake from rurality: examples of Pueblos Remotos (part 1)

Employment is a resilience work, but it is even more so if it is done from the rural environment, here we want to leave some examples.

Written article Carlos Jonay Suárez , co -founder and responsible for digital strategy in remote villages.

As I write these words, I am increasingly aware that the year 2022 is playing to an end. That means that almost ten years ago I started with my 'adventures' as an entrepreneur, either putting my own projects underway, or helping other people to put them in motion as a consultant.

Entrepreneurs, perhaps it has also been the fashion word of these last ten years? Be that as it may, the world of entrepreneurship has revolved, at least around me, about innovation, technology, startups and all that language in a perfect spanglish that we have created to glorify at the end.

But, that side of entrepreneurship is only part of all the modalities, categories and land that exist within the entrepreneurial world and for that reason I want to tell you in this post post what are some of those ventures that have fallen in love from remote villages.

When the essence of undertaking is in why

In many conversations, during a coffee, dinner or drinking some reeds, many friends ask me why? Why I have decided to undertake, or as I prefer to say: 'To start things'

Many times, I do not know the exact answer, I like to do things with meaning, mount them (or mount them with someone), see them grow, experiment and enjoy what I do.

Behind many ventures there is a great 'why' and if in addition, that venture occurs in the rural world, why usually has even more value.

Among all the experiences we have lived during these almost two years of life we have seen all kinds of stories, professionals and personal, which have captivated us:

  • People who have returned to their native island to continue with family businesses of third, fourth or fifth generation, keeping the essence of their parents alive, or their grandparents.

  • People passionate to one hundred percent for what they do, and when I tell you passionate, I tell you that they live it with the emotions to the leather.

  • People who take much of their time to carry out social work, or solidarity, how to clean a beach, or collect abandoned animals.

  • People who embrace traditions and transmit their knowledge so that they do not get lost in oblivion.

  • People who want to change things, who fight day by day to improve their environment and to act collaboration networks.

In short, people who have embraced themselves to do above complaining and who are proposing changes, called to action and are betting on changing the vision of the rural world.

Whatever their 'why', it is what pushes them to move forward and give life to their projects.

Examples worthy of recognition

If I have something clear, and I can also speak on behalf of Elsa (co -founder of pueblos remotos) is that all the projects we have worked with in these 3 editions of pueblos remotos are worthy of recognition.

Let's talk about our main local actors, the secondary, of our local leaders or even several projects that have been left out, we can always say that human quality is everyone's essence.

If I have to collect the different ventures with which we have worked side by side under certain 'categories' (for not separating them again by editions) I could tell you about:

Accommodations

As I always tell you, the place where we stay is the cornerstone of all our editions, they are our house for twenty -one days and that is precisely what they do, that we feel at home.

Time passes, we always remember the sunsets in Alberto Dorner (Icod de los Vinos), in the era of the Court (old) or in the melinders (Fuencaliente). All those moments of connection, dinner between laughs and many hours of teleworking.

Coincidentally, the stories of these three accommodations have certain similarities and coincidences, in the background, they have a history behind, a family story that give it the essence that they want to convey.

  • Alberto Dorner boutique hotel located in the coastal area of Icod de los Vinos (Playa de San Marcos) and the history of its founder, Kay González , is linked to the roots to the earth. Kay was an associate professor of Hispanic languages at the University of Chicago, a city where he lived until just a few years ago. Looking for closeness to his homeland (Tenerife) and his family, led him to return to the island and to launch an innovative project, linked to the municipality and tries to promote local products among their guests.

  • Hotel Era de la Court is a rural hotel located in the municipality of Antigua (Fuerteventura) and the history of its founders, Malole and David , has certain similarities with the history of Kay. After working for several years as director of Human Resources at Kombats-Hostels (Austria), Malole decided to return to Fuerteventura to become the CEO of the Court era, collecting the witness of her father and continuing with a family business In a house with a lot of charm, and a lot of history.

  • The melindros is a set of two rural houses located in the area of the burns, in the municipality of Fuencaliente ( La Palma ) the history of Lourdes (manager of the houses), Cristóbal (her husband) and Diego (our local leader in remote villages Fuencaliente) is a history of resilience. The melindros is a family project, a house bought and renovated with a lot of effort and the savings of years. That dream was truncated by a fire in 2009, which razed the houses completely. That is where the resilience that is spoken in the entrepreneurial world comes into play, with a lot of work, effort and art, they managed to restore the houses completely, leaving them as they were with the original design.

With this post post I want to give you entrance to the first examples of undertaking from rurality that we have met with Pueblos Remotos , as well as answer some fundamental issues. Throughout the next post I will leave you more examples linked to ecological crops, with pastries, oenology, traditions or rural volunteering.
